Tzars favored icons produced in Palekh because they preserved the traditional Russian style characterized by fine brushwork, precise architectural backdrops and landscapes, and heightened detail. After the atheist Bolshevik revolution of 1917, however, Palekhs icon painters had to find other applications for their talents. They decorated wooden spoons, matryoshka dolls, boxes and dishes.
